Barquisimeto

First founded by Don Juan de Villegas in 1552 and named Nueva Segovia, it was later moved to several different places until 1563 when the town definitely settle. Barquisimeto is today a modern town, fourth most populated in the country; highly important for its situation in the middle of the central-west axis of communications, industries and agriculture.

Like most Venezuelan towns, Barquisimeto has some interesting colonial architecture alongside with some fine works of modern architecture, like the Cathedral that was designed by the architect John Bergcamp.

In Barquisimeto you can visit the museums of History, Archeology, Paleontology and Barquisimeto. The last one opened to the public in 1983 at the former Hospital de La Caridad (The Charity Hospital). The museum has ten rooms, where the works of artists of the region as well as those from other museums are exhibited.

In Barquisimeto it is also worth visiting some squares, where you might have the chance to listen to some local music bands. This customary activity along with the well known musical genius of the "barquisimetanos" have earned the city the name of "Capital Musical de Venezuela" (Venezuela Musical Capital).

The Divine Shepherdess (La Divina Pastora), whose image is one of the most representative of the city, is particularly honoured during the procession, which is the climax of the annual festivities that Barquisimeto holds on her honour in January.
